We are Home, a Children’s Book
- Category: Small Scale Farming
In 2021, Food Next Door (FND) partnered with Regenerative Communities to evaluate the well-being impacts of farming on new migrants from Africa. This resulted in the insightful “I Am Home” report. Through a series of intimate interviews, FND farmers defined well-being in their own words, inviting researchers into their homes to share food, laughter, and stories. A key theme emerged: the deep desire to continue cultural traditions by sharing food and farming knowledge with their children. The “I Am Home” report beautifully illustrates how farming not only sustains families but also nurtures cultural heritage and fosters a sense of community among new migrants. To create a children’s book that celebrates the migration and settlement experiences of Burundian and Congolese communities in Mildura, reflecting their languages and cultural richness.
Financial Literacy Program
- Category: Small Scale Farming
The ‘Food Moves Skills into Migrant Women’ project, developed in collaboration with Macquarie University and Ecstra Foundation, aims to empower immigrant women with refugee backgrounds residing in regional Australia with foundational financial literacy skills. The program focuses on imparting budgeting and management skills, mentoring on project management, and social enterprise business creation within a language and culturally safe environment.
Community Demonstration Farm
- Category: Capacity Building
Food Next Door Community Farm is dedicated to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where individuals from migrant and refugee backgrounds can connect with the land, enhance their skills, and build a sustainable future for themselves and their families. Through small-scale agriculture, we are building capacity, promoting sustainable agriculture, and fostering food sovereignty and community cohesion. Through a generous land share arrangement, twenty-four plots are cultivated to provide food for subsistence and generate additional income for participating families and our local food system.
